    Mk 6 golf timing belt or chain?

    Just want to know does it need to replace like a mk 5
    2013 POLO GTI Black
    2005 MKV 2.0 FSI Black

    GTI is chain, R is still belt. Not sure about the lower models tho!

    Both the 90TSI and 118TSI use chains too.

    I know little about the diesels. But at least as of late 2007 the 2.0L TDI used a belt. I'm not sure of it's current status.

    ...and what's cheaper to replace? chain or belt?

    The theory is that the chain doesn't need to be replaced. Thus you don't have the really expensive 100,000 or 120,000 "timing belt" service, where you can get charged $900 in labour to replace a $30 belt etc (figures just examples from past cars, not based on current VW service times or charges)

    I think with timing chain, you don't replace them until they start to get really noisy (think they will usually last for the life of the engine) whereas with timing belt, replace every 60k? or 100k?

    so I guess u spend more replacing belt as compare to chain...

    I hate the fascination with timing belts from modern manufacturers. Especially when combined with the interference engines most run.
