Vertragsunterzeichnung Gazprom

Volkswagen Motorsport is pleased to be able to welcome the world’s largest producer of natural gas, GAZPROM, as its new partner. The GAZPROM logo will be a prominent feature in the Scirocco R-Cup from 2013 onwards. On 08 April, Chairman of the GAZPROM Board of Directors and former Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Viktor Zubkov, and Member of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand, Dr. Hackenberg, met at the Hannover Messe 2013 trade show to sign an agreement, which sees GAZPROM take on the role of exclusive fuel supplier to the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup as of May 2013.

Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport Director: “We are delighted to welcome GAZPROM as the new partner of the Scirocco R-Cup. Environmentally-friendly and efficient motorsport has always been a primary objective at Volkswagen. This partnership sees two global players join forces. Volkswagen has a long tradition when it comes to natural gas-driven vehicles. I am looking forward to working together.”

“As a fuel, natural gas has huge potential to allow automobiles to be used in an energy-efficient, environmentally-clean and economic manner. For GAZPROM, this business area takes precedence when developing the company, including in foreign markets. As such, the agreement with Volkswagen is a logical continuation of our efforts to increase the use of natural gas as a fuel in European countries. I am confident that our cooperation will be a successful one,” stressed Viktor Zubkov, Chairman of the GAZPROM Board of Directors.

GAZPROM is committed to the further development of natural gas as a fuel. The Russian energy group is investing in expanding the necessary infrastructure, in order to be able to run natural gas-driven vehicles throughout Europe in the future. In Germany, the German subsidiary GAZPROM Germania plans to double the number of natural gas filling stations by 2014. The company is also working together with its subsidiary VEMEX to accelerate the expansion of the network of filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Natural gas power and Push-to-pass – the Scirocco R-Cup in detail

Environmentally-friendly, spectacular, popular with the stars: the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup is the only one-make cup in the world to use environmentally-friendly natural gas. The 25-man field consists of a mixture of talented juniors and motorsport legends. Among the prominent starters are racing drivers such as Formula One world champion Damon Hill, World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz, and Indy-500 champion Arie Luyendyk. Over the course of 2013, nine rounds will be held on DTM weekends at the some of the most renowned circuits in Europe.

The two-litre turbo engine in the R-Cup version generates up to 210 kW (285 hp). And it features a real show-stopper: the Push-to-pass system allows the drivers to increase the basic output from 235 to 285 hp several times per race at the push of a button. A 22-kilogram crash test-certified natural gas tank is located in the rear of the Scirocco R-Cup racing car, which weighs 1,210 kilograms when empty.
