ŠKODA Australia will continue its strong presence in the cycling world with the announcement of an extension to its broadcast partnership with SBS and sponsorship of Channel 9’s coverage of the 2012 Tour Down Under.

ŠKODA Australia has locked in a two-and-a-half year deal with SBS as its broadcast partner of the world’s most famous road race, the Tour de France, as well Grand Tours like the Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a Espana and Paris Roubaix, plus other key road races including the Tour of California and Tour of Britain. As part of ŠKODA’s global cycling partnerships, the deal also covers the UCI Road and Track Championships.

Earlier this year, ŠKODA Australia confirmed its commitment to cycling in Australia by extending its sponsorship of the Tour Down Under through to 2014. Providing over 130 vehicles to next year’s Tour Down Under, ŠKODA Australia will be leveraging its already strong relationship with Channel 9 and further cementing its association with cycling locally.

“Cycling is part of our cultural DNA,” said Matthew Wiesner, Director of ŠKODA Australia. “We began manufacturing bicycles when the company first started in 1895; it was only natural to complement our global dominance of cycling with targeted broadcast arrangements of blue ribbon cycling events like the Tour de France and Tour Down Under.

“We’ve been a Premier Partner of Le Tour since 2004, the Giro d’Italia since 2007, Tour Down Under since 2008, and the Vuelta a Espana since 2010, and during that time we’ve witnessed the phenomenal growth of cycling’s popularity. We have big plans for our cycling involvements both here and abroad moving forward and, with Cadel Evans going on to defend his Tour de France win in 2012, and a host of upcoming Aussie talent being showcased at next year’s race, ŠKODA is proud to continue its association with elite road cycling.”

ŠKODA sponsors a number of Pro Tour teams who take part in the global UCI Pro Tour Series around the world: Team Cofidis, Cervélo Test Team, Team Francais des Jeux, Team Euskaltel-Euskadi, Team Rabobank, Team Saxo Bank and Team Omega Pharma Lotto.
